Telecommunication services snapped across Valley

Srinagar: The authorities today suspended mobile and internet services in most parts of the Valley fearing the same might be used to disrupt the August 15 celebrations.

Around 8:00 am today, the cellular and the internet service was suspended today by the mobile companies on the instructions of the authorities amid apprehensions that the technology might be used to organize anti-India protests or militant strikes, reports said. The service remained affected for nearly four hour before the parade at the highly fortified Bakshi Stadium concluded.

Snapping telecommunication services in the Valley has been a norm since a decade on the days like August 15 and January 26.

However, last year, the services were spared by the authorities maintaining that the Valley was normal and peaceful.

Besides August 15 and January 26, the authorities have also cut off telecommunication services several times, including the 2010 mass uprising and the hanging of parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru.
