SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Wednesday appealed people to observe shutdown on August 15.
“By observing shutdown, Kashmiris will protest the atrocities aimed to suppress the Kashmir movment besides showing complete commitment and resolve towards the movement,” Mirwaiz said in a statement.
He said that his party wasn’t against the Independence Day celebrations and progress of any country. “However, the peace and prosperity in the region could only be achieved if Kashmir issue is resolved according to the wishes and aspirations of Kashmir.”
Mirwaiz stated that India gave innumerable sacrifices for its freedom and “thus it could have been perceived the country would respect the freedom of others as well.”
“However, the reality was that the claimants of so-called biggest democracy has suppressed the political, religious and economic rights of Kashmir by use of military might and used all tactics to break the resolve of Kashmiri people and its leadership,” he alleged.
He said that instead of turning its eyes away from the historical and political realities of Kashmir, Indian leadership should accept the reality that “it can’t suppress the aspirations and emotions of Kashmiris for too long by use of force and coercion.”
Meanwhile, a Hurriyat (M) spokesman has condemned the frisking by the forces across the state in the wake of August 15. He stated that people were being frisked and checkpoints were installed to create inconvenience under the garb of security.
