Killing of Lashkar commander, associate, triggers protest in Pulwama

Pulwama: CRPF and police lobbed teargas canisters and fired warning shots to break up pro-freedom protests that erupted in Ratnipora area of this south Kashmirdistrict after the killing of two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, including the outfit’s commander.

Hundreds of people, mostly young boys hit the streets in Ratnipora after the two LeT militants, including the outfit’s commander Irshad Ahmad Ganai and his associate Showkat, both locals, were killed by the joint team of Special Operations Group (SOG) of police and army this afternoon, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. Chanting pro-Azadi slogans, the protesters pelted stone upon the government forces.

“The forces fired warning shots after they failed to disperse angry protesters with teargas canisters . The defiant youth, however, continued renewed attacks on the government forces,” witnesses said.

According to witnesses, massive clashes were going on, even as the youth from adjoining villages have joined in to register their anger against the killing of militants. More details emerging.
