SRINAGAR: Seventeen people are currently detained under the controversial Public Safety Act (PSA) across the state, even as the official records of the cases dating from 2005to 2014, have been destroyed during last year’s devastative floods.
“As on 21-07-2015, total 17 persons are detained under the Section (8) of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978. Three of them are under detention for secessionist activities,” Public Information Officer, Home Department, Syed Sarfaraz Rizvi, says while replying to the right to information (RTI) application filed by a journalism student Ahsan-ul Shafi.
Shafi had also sought the details of the people currently detained under the PSA and also how among them were facing imprisonment for separatist activities.
PSA, which Amnesty International has described as a ‘lawless law’ allows judicial custody for two years without trial and bail.
