Doctor arrested after girl dies of “negligence”

Pulwama: Police have arrested a doctor after a girl died of alleged medical negligence at a hospital in the neighboring Shopian district triggering off violent protests by locals.

19-year-old Zubaida, daughter of Abdul Salam Dar of Hurpora, Nagbal was taken by her family to the sub-district hospital, Zainpora, Shopian on Sunday night after she complained of abdomen pain, witnesses told Kashmir Reader today. At the hospital, a doctor examined her and prescribed a painkiller for relief.

“However, the tablet did not relieve the teenager from the pain. She was again taken to the hospital by her perturbed family. But the doctor did not open the door of his room. As a result, the girl died in the compound of the hospital,” witnesses said.

When the news of the alleged negligent death spread in the area today, scores of people, including the relatives of the deceased girl staged protests against the hospital administration. Chanting slogans, the protesters alleged stern action against the doctor, who failed to attend the patient.

The protesters went violent damaging TV sets and the windscreen of the ambulance. Later, a team of civil and police officials reached the spot and pacified the protesters by assuring action against the doctor, if found guilty.

A senior police official said that doctor Naseer Ahmad, against whom allegations of negligence have been leveled, has been arrested.

“A case has been filed and investigations started,” he added.
