Baramulla: A clash broke out between Municipal Council employees and Sumo drivers in Baramulla on Wednesday leaving many injured.
Witnesses said that many employees of the Council were clearing the Tehsil road of the district in the afternoon when some Sumo drivers objected to their work.
They said that the “minor issue” turned into a clash as the two groups started thrashing each other.
Witnesses said that one of the Municipal Council employee, Nazir Ahmad Bhat received serious injuries in the incident and was shifted to District Hospital Baramulla for treatment.
Later the employees of the Council took to streets demanding arrest of the drivers.
A team of police headed by Station House Officer, Ayaz Ahmad Geelani reached the spot and assured them of action, reports said.
Executive Officer, Municipal Council Baramulla, Shabir Ahmad Wani said that the employees were clearing the roads and paths of different markets in the district.
“Unfortunately some drivers attacked and injured many employees. We demand strict action against the culprits,” he said. However, the drivers refuted the allegations and said that some of their vehicles were damaged by the employees without any reason.
Meanwhile, general secretary of Traders Federation Baramulla, Er Tariq Ahmad Magloo condemned the incident and appealed police to take strict action against the drivers.
He said that the Municipal Council was doing good work for the past many months as they were clearing roads and paths in the area.
The protesting employees threatened of protests on Thursday if police failed to arrest the drivers.
