Kashmiri legislator detained for protesting Yaqub hanging

Srinagar: Police today detained Engineer Sheikh Abdur Rashid, Independent legislator from Langate constituency of Kupwara district during a demonstration against the hanging of Yakub Memon in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.

Flanked by his supporters, Rashid appeared at the Press Colony, Lal Chowk here in this capital city and staged a demonstration denouncing Yaqub’s hanging, witnesses told Kashmir Reader. Carrying placards and banners and shouting slogans “Gali Gali Main Shor Hain, Delhi Aadam Khor Hain” the lawmaker said that Yaqub’s hanging is travesty of justice.

“Yaqub is another victim of Indian government’s inhumane justice delivery system,
Rashid said.

During the protest, Rashid also demanded the return of mortal remains of Mohammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged and secretly buried in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail on February 9, 2013 on charges of attacking Indian parliament.

Witnesses said that while the MLA was staging a protest, a police team detained him along with some of his supporters.
