ANANTNAG: In the second grenade attack in less than a week at least eight people, four civilians and an equal number of CRPF troopers (including an assistant commandant) sustained injuries in this south Kashmir township on Wednesday. Suspected militants tossed a grenade towards CRPF men near Oxford Presentation School on the Khanabal-Pahalgam (KP) road. The explosion resulted in injuries to four CRPF men and four pedestrians. The injured were immediately taken to district hospital Anantnag where they are being treated.
In an emailed statement to Kashmir Reader, a spokesman of Tehreek-ul-Mujahideen claimed responsibility for the attack. The militant group said it had attacked a CRPF bunker and claimed one CRPF trooper was killed while several others were injured when its cadres lobbed two grenades. “A one-ton vehicle of CRPF was completely damaged while our cadres snatched a rifle from the Indian troopers,” the spokesman said. He also claimed the civilians were injured as a result of firing by CRPF troopers to ‘avenge’ the attack.
The injured civilians were identified as Abdul Majid Mir s/o Habibullah of Kadipora, Abid Ali Lone s/o Ali Mohammad of Sarnal, Ghulam Mohammad Wani s/o Mohammad Abdullah of Sagam Kokernag and Bashir Ahmad Ali s/o Ghulam Mohammad of Utrasoo Shangas. The CRPF troopers who sustained injuries were identified as Nisar Ahmad s/o Ali Mohd of Poonch, Chandar s/o Tilak Raj , Sunil and (assistant commandant) Chaman Lal s/o Bakhshi Sharma. All the injured troopers belong to the 96 Bn.
Doctors at the hospital said that the condition of all the injured was stable. A police official said that the grenade was aimed at a CRPF vehicle which was supplying lunch to CRPF men on Yatra duty along the KP road but missed the target and exploded on the road. Eyewitnesses said a Scorpio vehicle, which was parked near the spot, also suffered damage
Last Thursday, a civilian was killed and five others, including a CRPF trooper, were injured after unidentified persons hurled a grenade towards CRPF men in Ganjiwara area of the town.
