Yaqub moves fresh mercy petition

New Delhi: Yakub Abdul Razak Memon, the lone death row convict in the 1993 Bombay serial blasts that left 257 dead and over 700 injured, today moved a fresh mercy plea with the President.

The fresh plea by Yakub comes; a day after his execution on July 30 was stayed after two-judge bench of the Supreme Court delivered a split verdict and referred the matter to the Chief Justice to take call on it.

While Justice AR Dave dismissed his plea, Justice Kurian Joseph stayed the death warrant issued on April 30 for his execution on July 30.

Meanwhile, a three-judge Supreme Court bench has begun the hearing for the final plea by Yakub.
