Srinagar: Taliban leader Mullah Omar has died, BBC reported on Wednesday, even as another media report quoting Pakistan officials confirmed the news.
The BBC said in its report that the Taliban have not commented upon the death of Omar. However, it added that the group would issue a statement shortly.
Meanwhile, another media report quoting Pakistani authorities confirmed the death of Omar,
The issue was reportedly discussed during a meeting of the Afghan cabinet following the confirmation by Pakistani authorities, the Khaama Press reported.
The Pakistani authorities said Mullah Omar had died two years ago but no further details were given regarding the circumstances surrounding his death, the report said.
In April, the Afghan Taliban published a descriptive biography of their “charismatic” supreme leader Mullah Omar, in a surprise move apparently aimed at countering the creeping influence of the Islamic State group within insurgent ranks.
