Demanding probe, Manderbagh residents protest, clash with cops
Srinagar: Violent clashes erupted in Mandarbagh and Maisuma localities on Sunday after the body of a 16-year-old boy, who went missing since July 18, was recovered from Jhelum in Sumbal area.
The news of the death of the boy, Owais Ahmad Phufoo son of Mohammad Ismail of Manderbagh, Gawkadal, triggered protests in the area, with the local residents demanding an investigation into his death.
The protest soon morphed into violent clashes, with the protesters, throwing stones at the police. About a dozen protesters were injured. Some of them were injured because of lethal pellet ammunition.
The body of the boy was handed over to the family after post mortem.
Central Kashmir deputy inspector general of police Ghulam Hassan Bhat told KNS that the police will soon solve the case, while asking people to cooperate with them.
Owais, the eldest among three siblings, was contributing to the family income by selling footwear on a foothpath.
Mohammad Ismail Phufoo, his father, who hawks household goods on a cart, had been hit by four in the early 2000s.
