2 militants killed, 3 troopers injured in gunfight: Army

Baramulla: The army claimed that it killed two militants, while two of its soldiers were injured, in a gunfight in Kupwara district on Thursday morning.
Since the area is heavily militarized and access of civilians there is subject to army’s approval, it is difficult to confirm the news independently. Army or police are therefore the only sources of information about gunfights or other events in such areas.
According to officials, a group of three to four militants trying to enter Kashmir from Pakistan administered Kashmir were ambushed near Eagle Post in Tanghdar area of Kupwara district by Border Security Force troopers and the soldiers of 26 Rajputana Rifles on Wednesday afternoon.
The militants, however, managed to escape. The government forces launched a search operation during the night but suspended it because of darkness.
On Thursday morning, the soldiers ambushed the hiding militants and killed two of them. Three soldiers, Akash, Balbir Singh and Ranjeet Kumar were wounded in the gun battle, which was on till last reports.
A large number of commandos from the elite 4 Para were also sent to the site. Defence officials said the body of the militants could not be recovered because of bad weather.
Baramulla deputy inspector general of police Gareeb Das said, “The area is located at a very high altitude close to the Line of Control. We have no phone network with officials posted in the area that is why we can’t say how many have been killed or injured.”
