Ganderbal: A teenage girl has died and several others are missing after a cloudburst hit many villages of Gund area of Ganderbal district on Thursday.
The cloudburst also caused damage to dozens of houses and washed away half a dozen vehicles, a police official told Kashmir Reader.
The cloudburst hit Kullan, Gagangir and Shitkadi areas of Tehsil Gund in Ganderbal district killing a minor Ishrat Jan, 16, whose body has been retrieved from the debris so far.
The cloudburst inundated the whole area of Kullan. “Some of the houses also suffered damage due to the gushing waters.The water also caused extensive damage to the crops and washed away land at many places,” officials said.
Meanwhile, a police rescue team from Police Station Gund headed by Manzoor Ahmad rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation.
Manzoor Ahmad later confirmed the death of the teenage girl and said that cloudburst hit Kullan, Gagangir and Badipadan areas of Gund tehsil causing damage to many houses and vehicles. He further said that more persons were missing as the rescue operations were on.
Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal, Showkat Aijaz told Kashmir Reader that he is on way to the area. “I am on way and we have already dispatched a team to the area, “ he said. He said that ten families were evacuated and shifted to high school Kullan.
The road leading to Sonamarg-Baltal was closed due the debris and excess water in the area.
Due to the closure of the road, hundreds of Yatris remained stranded at Gund and Sonamarg, witnesses said.
Meanwhile, panic has gripped the whole area as people were reluctant to return to thier homes late in the evening.
