Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Geelani on Wednesday alleged that a pro-government gunman, with the army’s active support has made the lives of Tarzoo residents in Sopore “hellish”. “The army has once again become pro-active in the Valley and they have started harassing the common people like in the 90s. An Ikhwani, an informer called Jaleel is working with the Indian army in the Tarzoo Sopore Camp and with the help of the army has made the lives of the people living in that area a hell,” Geelani said in a statement issued here on Wednesday evening.
He said that on the informer’s instance, a civilian Lateef Ahmad Bhat was arrested by the army and later handed over to the SOG in Cargo where he was subjected to the ‘worst kind of custodial torture’. “The army also raided the house of Waseem Ahmad Bhat and vandalised his house and looted precious items,” he said.
Geelani also demanded the release of all the political prisoners before Eid. He said that among other election promises, Mufti Sayeed had also backed out from his claim regarding the release of the prisoners, and only a single political leader was released during his period but he was again imprisoned after pressure from the BJP. Geelani also demanded the shifting of all Kashmiris detained in Delhi’s Tihar Jail including Dr. Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, Tariq Ahmad Dar, Mohammad Rafiq Shah, Javaid Fazali and Muzaffar Ahmad and said that a majority of them have been framed in false cases and since the judiciary was also ‘not impartial’ so their imprisonment was been prolonged.
The veteran pro-freedom leader also urged Amnesty International and other human rights organisations to take serious notice of the conditions of Kashmiri detainees.
