Ex-DSP succumbs to injuries at SMHS hospital

Srinagar: A retired police officer, who was shot at and critically injured by suspected militants in Kulgam district of south Kashmir on Tuesday night, succumbed to injuries at a hospital here in this capital city.

Bashir Ahmad Dar, a retired Deputy Superintendent of Police was critically wounded after fired from close range by motorcycle borne gunmen in Ashmujee village of the district around 10:00 pm Tuesday. He was coming out of the local Masjid after offering late night prayers (Tarawi) when the militants fired random shots at him.

The ex-DSP had sustained multiple injuries in the surprise attack and was instantly removed to the Srinagar’s SMHS hospital for treatment.

“The retired police officer succumbed to injuries at the hospital, hours after he was taken there. He had received shots in abdomen, leg and shoulder,” a senior police officer told Srinagar based news gathering agency Global News Service.

The deceased, the police officer said has served in different positions in the Crime Branch, Vigilance and the headquarters during his tenure.

The officer said that after the attack, the militants fled from the spot taking advantage of the darkness

The attack on the retired police officer came hours after a panch, Mohammad Yaqoob Malla, was shot at and injured by gunmen in the neighboring Shopian district. (GNS)
