Baramulla: The army claimed on Sunday that it killed three militants who were trying to infiltrate into Kashmir from Pakistan administered Kashmir on Saturday night in Keran area of Kupwara district.
Since the area is inaccessible and heavily militarized, it is difficult to confirm the news independently. Army or police are therefore the only sources of information about gunfights or other events in such areas.
An army spokesman said in a statement that the troops spotted the militants moving from Pakistan administered Kashmir towards Line of Control and kept them “under surveillance” till they reached the border fence.
“The militants attempted to cut the fencing and cross over (to this side). They were effectively engaged by vigilant soldiers and then an intense gunfight ensued which resulted in elimination of three militants,” the statement reads.
The statement added that the bodies of the trio have been recovered and search has been launched for other militants who were part of the group and might have escaped.
The army claimed it recovered 3 AK 47 rifles, 300 rounds of ammunition, 5 grenades, a grenade launcher from the spot.
