Srinagar: Several persons, including a photo journalist, were wounded in violent protests that broke out in downtown Srinagar after the police and paramilitary troopers stopped a peaceful march demanding release of political prisoners.
Scores of youth gathered in Nowhatta, Khanyar and adjacent areas, shouting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. The protestors displayed the ISIS and Pakistani flags. As soon as they attempted to march towards Khanyar, the government forces fired teargas shells to disperse them.
The protesters then threw stones at the police who retaliated with teargas canisters and pellet ammunition, said a photo journalist.
He said his friend and Press Trust of India photographer Sheikh Irfan, who was covering the protest, was hit by a stone on his head.
