SRINAGAR: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday expressed hope that the government would actively consider release of political prisoners on the eve of Eid ul Fitr, considering its importance for the families of detainees.
In a statement, PDP general secretary Nizamudin Bhat said that the party also hoped that any request for parole from under trials and other jail inmates if pending with the home department would also be accorded compassionate consideration.
He said that PDP has always pleaded for justice and compassion and has struggled hard for healing touch policy as an alternative to sufferings of the people of Jammu & Kashmir.
“It is in this context that the attention towards families of incarcerated people should gain priority with the government. Anyone who is involved in minor offenses deserves amnesty and there has been always a consideration with the government to grant this as a welfare measure,” he said.
“It is PDP’s firm policy to adopt an emancipated policy even about those who have been battling for ideas and ideologies,” he added.
Bhat said that many forces have been causing hurdles in implementation of such liberal policies.
“However, both constitution and law favours a humanitarian angle. Therefore on a festival like Eid-ul-Fitr government should be firm in its approach to support its citizens as and when required,” he said.
Bhat said that there are cases where courts have granted bail to detainees and under trails who allegedly have not been released.
Inviting the attention of the government towards such cases, he said that orders of the court should be respected and those granted bail deserve to be released. He also demanded that pending cases against stone pelters be withdrawn.
