Soldier wounded as gunfight rages in south Kashmir’s Shopian

Srinagar: A soldier was injured this evening in a gunfight with militants in Shopian district of south Kashmir.

The gun-battle started this evening when Special Operations Group (SOG) of police and army’s 62 RR laid a cordon around Barbugh village of Imam Sahab on the inputs suggesting the presence of militants in the village, a local news agency Global News Service quoting official sources reported.

When the joint team started coming operations, the militants opened heavy gunfire towards them. The forces returned the fire triggering off brief encounter.

“In the exchange of fire, a soldier suffered injuries,” sources said, adding “Amidst the exchange of gunfire, the militants have managed to escape from the spot,”

The injured soldier has been identified as Ramesh Kumar of 62 RR.

The searches in the area were going on when the last reports came in. (GNS)
