ANANTNAG: Doctors removed a 22-kilogram cyst from the ovary of an 18-year-old girl at Anantnag district hospital on Saturday.
Khalida Jan, resident of Brari Aangan village in Shangas area of the district, had visited the hospital a few days ago, complaining of severe abdominal pain and distension, breathlessness, high fever and difficulty in walking.
Investigations revealed the presence of a big lump in her ovary, said Dr Azad Malik who conducted the 45-minute-long surgery this morning.
“The surgery was very complicated and involved high risk as the patient was not only physically weak but severely anemic,” Dr Malik said, adding it is for the first time that a district-level hospital has conducted such a complicated case.
The girl had to be given blood transfusion of around four pints.
“The patient and her attendants were very cooperative which encouraged me and my team to conduct the surgery with confidence,” Dr Malik added.
Others in the team were anesthesiologist Dr Firdous and theatre assistants Mohammad Latief, Mohammad Aslam, Mohammad Maqbool and GR Nadaf.
Anantnag chief medical officer Dr Fazil Kochak appreciated the doctors, calling it an “achievement”.
