‘Operation still on, no bodies recovered so far’
Baramulla: The army claims to have killed one more militant in the Boniyar area of Uri on Saturday, taking the death toll on the second day of an encounter with militants to three, including two militants and one soldier.
The army said the operation was going on along the LoC in the forested area near Torna in Boniyar sector since Friday when they reportedly intercepted a group of militants. “One terrorist was eliminated on Friday while one soldier made the supreme sacrifice. On Saturday morning, contact was again established with the terrorists hidden in the forested area, resulting in the elimination of one more terrorist, taking the total to two terrorists eliminated,” the army spokesman said.
There has been no independent confirmation of the incident in this inaccessible area. Reports of such incidents are usually only provided by the army or the police.
The army spokesman, meanwhile, also said three AK-47 rifles and three rucksacks were recovered from the site of the operation. “We have no information whether bodies have been retrieved or not. However, the operation is still on in the LOC area,” the spokesman said.
Deputy Inspector General of Police north Kashmir Gareeb Das also said the bodies of the dead militants have not been retrieved. “The encounter is continuing for the second day. We have not yet recovered the dead bodies of militants since the encounter site is close to the LOC,” he said. Das claimed continuous firing from Pakistani forces was also a reason why the militants’ bodies could not be retrieved.
The encounter between the army and suspected militants broke out on Friday when a group of 5 to 7 militants tried to sneak into this side of the LoC between the Noori and Gogar posts in Boniyar sector, the army said. One army man was also reportedly injured in the encounter.
