Geelani’s detention triggers violent protests in Anantnag

Anantnag: CRPF and police today used batons and burst teargas canisters in this south Kashmir Township to disperse hundreds of people protesting against the detention of Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani in Srinagar.

Scores of people, mostly young boys after offering congregational Friday prayers took out a rally to protest the arrest of Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, hours before he was scheduled to address a rally here in this south Kashmir town, witnesses told Kashmir Reader.

Shouting pro-freedom, pro-Islam and pro-Geelani slogans, the protesters marched through different localities of the old town.

“At Lal Chowk, Reshi Bazar, Janglat Mandi and other places, angry protesters hurled rocks at the CRPF and policemen. The forces responded by using batons and firing teargas canisters. This led to the outbreak of fierce clashes,” witnesses said.

The clashes between the protesters and the government forces were going on when the last reports came in.
