Purpose of Ramadhan

Fasting is more than just abstaining from food. The purpose of Ramadhan is introspection, self-restraint and moving towards righteousness.  “O ye who believe, fasting has been made obligatory for you in the same way as it was made obligatory for Ummah before you so that you become righteous,” Al Baqra.
Fasting teaches self-restraint, makes the believers watchful and enables them to refrain from indulging in vice.  The holy month is a training period. A Muslim learns how to spend the rest of the year in this month. The Muslims recite Quran; offer prayers, gives zakaat and sadaqaat. They also help each other; observe various sunnah of the revered Prophet (SAW).
Fasting teaches punctuality and stresses need on cleanliness of body and mind. One has to guard his tongue and abstain from using abusive, harsh language. One has to refrain from backbiting. The most revered Prophet (SAW) said: “Maybe a fasting person gains nothing from his fast except hunger and thirst. And maybe a person who prays in the night gains nothing from his prayer except staying up late.”
During the month of Ramadhan mosques are filled to capacity. But as soon as the holy month ends, the mosques lose nimazees one by one. A Muslim has to remain a Muslim until he lives. He refuses bribe in the holy month, but accepts it for the rest of the year. He offers salaat in the holy month, but abandons the highly virtuous deed after the month ends.  Muslims have to refrain from evil deeds throughout the year, not just in the holy month.  He has to recite the Quran not only in Ramadan, but throughout the year. He has to help people (irrespective of their religion) round the year and not just in the holy month.
The spirit displayed by the Muslims in Ramadan has to stay alive for the rest of the year.  This is what Allah the most exalted wants from them.  This is how ultimate salvation can be achieved.  Remember waywardness only harms the person who falls prey to it.  Allah does not need one’s prayers or zakaat. But he wants people to follow the right path. This is why he sent down the pious Messengers (AS) and the Books.
Last year, immediately after the holy month ended, huge rush was witnessed outside the liquor shops. The drunkards also caused a few accidents. Some precious lives were lost in these accidents. If the people can abstain from drinking for one month, they can abstain from the vice for the rest of the year. Nobody dies for want of liquor.
