HAJIN: Locals of Hajin Monday foiled an attempt by police to arrest a close aide of Masrat Alam.
A police party led by SHO Hajin raided the house of Showkat Hakeem, Press Secretary of the Alam-led Muslim league, and took him into ‘custody’ from his Paribal residence.
“As the police party, who had come in a private Scorpio, reached main market, a group of youth including women intercepted the vehicle shouting pro-freedom slogans,” eyewitnesses said.
“Though the police driver tried his best to avoid the group, but the protesters didn’t budge. The SHO was forced to talk to the protesters,” said a local, Meiraj-ud-din.
“He asked people not to pelt stones and when stone pelting stopped, he allowed Showkat to walk free,” Meiraj said.
Showkat alleged that police was harassing him and his family continuously. “They raided my house several occasions last week. After they failed to arrest me, they started abusing my parents and resorted to damaging the property,” he accused.
He alleged that police was also harassing the Muslim league leaders in Hajin.
Despite repeated attempts, SHO Hajin did not entertain calls from Kashmir Reader.
Meanwhile Hurriyat(G) strongly condemned the ‘continuous’ police raids at the residence of Showket Hakeem.
“Police is subjecting our leaders and activists to political vengeance and they are harassed without any justification. Showkat Sahab is a prominent political activist and he is not involved in any such activity for which the police are raiding his residence,” a spokesman of Hurriyat said.
