Jammu: The Governor, NN Vohra, Wednesday asked the state’s Animal Husbandry Ministry to formulate an Action Plan for increase in production of meat, poultry, fish, and dairy products in the state.
At the 13th Council Meeting of SKUAST-J, Vohra urged the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Sajad Gani Lone, to get the Action Plan formulated.
He stressed on the urgent need to rear quality breeds of cattle and goats for the state to become self-reliant in production of dairy and meat products.
Governor advised the Farm Universities of the state to play a “significant role” in propagation of high quality seeds and plant materials.
He stated that all available resources and expertise should be “optimally utilized” for producing quality seeds of various crops.
Action should be taken to ensure their timely supply to the farmers, he said, advising “fixing of a timeframe” for establishment of crop and objective-specific Model Villages in the state.
Vohra stressed on the need for expansion of micro irrigation facilities to increase the net irrigated area in the state.
Reviewing issues relating to the establishment of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Governor stressed on early establishment of KVKs within fixed timelines and to ensure effective transfer of technology from labs to farms for the benefit of the farmers.
He advised the Commissioner of the Agriculture Production Department to personally visit the proposed sites and expedite land acquisition proceedings to avoid further delay in establishing KVKs.
Vohra advised the Vice-Chancellor (VC) to set up a mechanism for the qualitative assessment of research projects.
He urged the VCs to see that the achievements and success stories of progressive farmers are well publicized and also published in vernacular languages.
