Army on Monday claimed that its men, in a gunfight in Kamla forests of Tral,  killed an unidentified militant. They had also claimed recovery of two AK-47 rifles from the encounter site and arrest of four other youth from the area.
However the deceased later turned out to be a civilian and was identified as Khalid Muzafar Wani, the brother of the most wanted militant commander of the area, Burhan.
The killing triggered massive protests in Tral town and other adjoining areas which continued till late night.
Reports said that violent clashes rocked the town after hundreds of youth from adjoining areas came to offer funeral prayers of the slain youth.  They resorted to heavy stone throwing at police and Para-military CRPF men deployed in the town.
Reports said as soon as Nimaz-e-Jinaza of the youth, in which more than ten thousand people participated was offered, hundreds of angry youth clashed with forces. The forces, eyewitnesses said, burst tear smoke shells and fired bullets and  pellets to chase away the angry stone pelting youth.
During the day long clashes, over a dozen youth suffered injuries after being hit by pellets and tear gas canisters. One of the youth, identified as Mohammad Ashraf of Batgund was shifted to SMHS after being cortically injured. A doctor at SMHS hospital said that the youth has received pellet injuries in his head. “He is under observation but out of danger,” said a doctor. Rest of the injured were treated at sub-district hospital Tral. “We have discharged some of the injured after the necessary treatment while few are still admitted,” said an official  posted at SDH Tral.
Unconfirmed reports said that during the clashes some unidentified persons also snatched the service rifle of a CRPF trooper of 40 battalion. Meanwhile the body of a suspected militant who the officials claimed had suffered injuries in the gunfight with army on Monday was recovered from the Kamla forests. He was identified as Yunus Ahmad Ganai of Tral. Deputy Inspector general (DIG), south Kashmir, Nitish Kumar, said that the slain had got injured in Mondays gunfight. “During the search operation he body was recovered by the army this afternoon,” DIG said.
