Govt mulls to introduce HDV fruits in JK

JAMMU: Minister for Horticulture Abdul Rehman Veeri Tuesday said his ministry is contemplating to introduce High Density Variety (HDV) fruit plants in the state.
He was discussing the operations of the Horticulture and Hajj and Auqaf.
He said filling up of vacant posts and reactivating basic units of the horticulture department would get focussed attention of the state.
“The Chief Minister is personally keen to promote this sector. The initiatives taken for this purpose will yield better results,” he said.
Veeri said “necessary instructions” have been issued to the officers of the department to make best use of the services of Rehbari Zirat staff.
The enforcement wing of the department, he added, would be given “more teeth” to check the trade of substandard fertilizers and pesticides.
“GCOs would be activated in their respective areas, besides launching awareness campaign across the state. If needed, the necessary legislation will be brought on the subject,” he said.
Veeri said steps would also be taken to promote the fruits produced in a particular area, while cold storage facilities would be created wherever required.
“Private players will also be roped in for this process,” he said. ,
The department is contemplating to establish soil, pesticides-testing laboratories and pesticides manufacturing units in the state, he said.
He said 40-room Kissan Ghar will be constructed in New Delhi while infrastructure available at other places would be renovated.
Meanwhile, the Minister said there is no shortage of pesticides, fertilizers, or spray oil in Sonawari constituency of Kashmir division.
“As per the estimates, 40,000 litres of Horticulture Mineral Oil is required in the constituency, against which approximately 30,000 litres have already been stocked and are being sold in the area,” he said, replying to a Calling Attention Notice from Mohammad Akbar Lone in the Legislative Assembly here.
“The balance quantity is in transit and will be stocked within a couple of days,” he added.
For preparation of Diesel Oil Emulsion, Veeri said, Diesel Oil (HSD) is available in “abundant quantity” at the petrol pumps in the constituency and the Fish Oil Soap, required for making the emulsion, is “readily available” with Agro Industries Development Corporation and the pesticides dealers.
He said “sufficient quantity” of pesticides is available with the distributors for supply to the retailers as per demand.
“Total requirement of first spray of pesticides falling due in first week of April is around 12 MT of contact pesticides, which is available with the main stockists,” he added.
He informed that 208 MTs of urea, 142 MTs of DAP, and 95 MTs of MOP are available in Sonawari.
“Most of the fertilizer quantity has already been lifted by the growers and still sufficient quantity is available in the registered outlets. There is no shortage of pesticides and fertilizers in the constituency,” he added.
The Minister said “sufficient quantity” of pesticides and fertilizers are available in the Valley for distribution to the fruit growers.
At present, 10 companies have stocked fungicides and insecticides with their distributors in the Valley, he said, adding, with the onset of spray season, more fungicides will be arriving in Kashmir division.
