Baramulla: In a rare instance, two militants escaped during a gunfight after killing a Rashtriya Rifles soldier and a Special Police Officer in Hardshora village of Tangmarg on Thursday.
A civilian, two soldiers and a policeman were also injured in the gunfight. Local residents said that scores of soldiers from 29 RR and special operations group of the police had cordoned off a house, where the militants were hiding, at about 7am.
But before the soldiers and the policemen could launch an offensive or blast off the house with explosives, which is the standard technique in such gunfights, the militants fired at the troopers, injuring three soldiers and two cops. A civilian identified as Manzoor Ahmad Rather was also injured in the exchange of fire. He has been shifted to a hospital in Srinagar for treatment.
The deceased have been identified as Nagraj Jageshwar, a soldier of 29 RR, and policeman Mohammad Shafi Dar of Narbal, Pattan. The injured soldiers are Mandeep Kumar and Jagjeet Singh. They have been shifted to 92 base hospital in Srinagar.
“The militants managed to escape and the search operation has been called off,” a police spokesman said.
Local residents said the troopers searched the area for about four hours but were unable to find the militants.
In February this year, an unspecified number of militants had given slip to government forces during a cordon in Magray Mohalla of Achabal in Anantnag district.
News agency GNS, quoting a police official, had reported that the army had cordoned off a house near Achabal Check post but as soon as it started searching the house, the militants had escaped without opening fire.
