JAMMU: The Government on Sunday said that measures will be taken to promote high density plantations and phasing out old plantations which have completed their economic life.
This was disclosed by Minister for Horticulture, Abdul Rehman Veeri in reply to a question raised by Abdul Rehim Rather in LA.
The minister informed the House that effective He said re-plantations will be done with new apple varieties on suitable rootstocks by introducing improved apple varieties that are regular and prolific bearers, resistant to biotic and abiotic stresses and also useful for processing purposes.
He said department contemplates developing infrastructure and facilities for multiplication of certified virus free tested plant material of apple rootstocks and scion cultivars for use in future orchard establishment besides identification of fruit trees of outstanding merits in existing apple plantation for their use as mother trees. The Minister said that the department is imparting training to orchardists in Canopy Management and Pruning in apple orchards though field functionaries.
He said awareness camps are also organized to educate the apple growers regarding various operations to be conducted in apple orchards including disease pest management.
The Minister said that for keeping check on the availability of quality pesticide in the market, the Horticulture Development Officers (HDOs) have been delegated with the powers of Insecticide Inspectors at Zonal level besides the subject matter specialists of the department are also designated Insecticide Inspectors at district level adding that intervention will help out in monitoring quality pesticide available in the market. He said moreover, government is considering bringing a stringent law to check sale of spurious pesticides and strict action against the dealers found involved in such practices.
Veeri said that Law Enforcement Wing of the department has been activated to keep a constant and strict vigil over the supply and sale of pesticides in the State. He said samples are taken from the manufacturing units as well as from the distributors, wholesalers and retailers by the Enforcement Agency and analyzed in the Quality Control Labs (Pesticide Testing Laboratory) of the State and the referral labs.
The defaulters / violators of the Act found indulging in supply of Sub standard / duplicate / fake pesticides, fungicides, insecticides in the state are booked under relevant section of Insecticides Act. He said appropriate penalties are imposed by the Court in such cases.
