Srinagar: The government Saturday asked the Commissioner Secretary Transport to prepare a report on “poor condition” of the weighing machines at the Excise & Taxation toll posts in the state.
An official handout issued here said the Minister of State (MoS) for transport, Rural Development, and Horticulture, Abdul Ghani Kohli, has given the authorities a week to prepare and submit the report.
The MoS, who was on a surprise visit to the toll posts in Jammu, passed the instructions after he learned that two weighing machines at Excise post near Rail Head Complex are defunct, it said.
“To keep a check on load and ensure strict adherence to the norms, Kohli directed the concerned officers of the Motor Vehicle Department to deploy adequate staff at these points till the machines are made functional,” it added.
The MoS, as per the handout, said “overloading in trucks lead to accidents and traffic jams, besides damaging the roads.”
He asked the officials to remove “all bottlenecks impeding smooth functioning of the department, so that results are visible on ground.”
He also asked the officers to take “strict action” against the drivers who indulge in overloading while he asked for the efforts to improve the functioning of the department.
