Bar seminar calls for unity among pro-freedom camp

Srinagar: Lawyers and members of Hurriyat Conference as well as Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Friday pitched for unity among pro-freedom camp.
“I urge lawyers to find out reasons why there has been disintegration after unification in our camp in the past. There are hundreds of chairmen and today we don’t know names of all of them,” said advocate Bashir Ahmad Bhat while addressing a seminar organized by Kashmir High Court Bar Association here to pay tributes to Jaleel Andrabi who was killed on March 27 by an army unit headed by Major Avtar Singh here seventeen years ago.
“It is strange that we are fighting for one cause yet we are scattered. Our enemy is very clever and does not want us to be one,” he said and urged Bar Association to constitute a team which will “go to every leader and request him to unite.”
“Those who disagree should be exposed,” he said.
Bhat also came down heavily on PDP for its alliance with BJP, alleging that it was RSS that decides everything in the government.
“RSS is the force behind the BJP and its program is that there should be no Muslims. Now Mufti Sayeed (PDP patron and Chief Minister) wants us to believe that his joining with BJP is in the interest of people,” he said.
“Mr Mufti, what are you doing? J&K has lost Sadar-e-Riyasat and Prime Minister and what not due to this Assembly.”
Referring to constitution of Delimitation Commission and settlement of west Pak refugees, he said that they were aimed to change the Muslim majority status of the state.
Paying tributes to ‘Jaleel-ul-Qadr Andrabi’, Bhat recalled that whenever he was arrested and detained “illegally and unlawfully” before or after 1990, Andrabi was always with him.
Addressing the seminar, a Hurriyat (M) representative also called for unity among the pro-freedom camp.
“I request the pro-freedom leadership to unite and fight against the tyrants with one voice. It should be based on only one formula : resolutions of United Nations,” Javaid Mir said.
Mir, a former JKLF commander, alleged that the ruling government of PDP-BJP was run by RSS from Nagpur.
“Settlement of West Pak refugees is aimed to change demography of the state and Kashmir will be turned into Qaza and Jammu as Israel and this is their plan.”
In his tributes to Jaleel Andrabi and other lawyers including Peer Hussam-udin, Abdul Gani Bhat, Sheikh Mohammad Hassan and Mohammad Sultan Bhat, he said that their sacrifices will not be allowed to go waste.
“Our struggle started before 1988 and it will continue till we get freedom from India,” he added.
Mohammad Yousuf Mir of Muslim League said that all the issues including settlement of WPRs were off -shoots of Kashmir issue.
“Unless Kashmir issue is settled, these peripheral issues will crop of from time to time,” he said and claimed that there was no difference between BJP and PDP.
“They are two faces of one and the same coin. Masrat Alam had to be released but to see that Dr. Qasim does not get out, hue and cry was raised,” he said.
Mir said that pro-freedom leadership should evolve a strategy to defeat “Indian policies on Kashmir.”
“We should have our common minimum programme so as to force India leave Kashmir. We should be ready to give any sacrifice for the cause.”
Advocate Majid Jehangir while recalling his association with Jaleel Andrabi said that he had love for every bit of the state.
“Jalil Andrabi was a true lover of J&K. He loved Jhelum, Chenab, Sindh and other water bodies.”
He said Andrabi wanted to change the notion of rulers that Kashmiris were soft to rule and easy to be subjugated.
“Martyr Andrabi one day said that he will prove not to be soft and remain virile. He proved it with his martyrdom,” he said.
He also urged pro-freedom leaders to unite for taking the “freedom struggle” to its logical end.
Advocate Mufti Mehraj, while paying rich tributes to Jalil Andrabi and other martyrs said that Kashmiri people have been always deceived by their leaders. “History bears witness that our leadership has left in midway. Our leadership should sit together and devise a common minimum programme to defeat Indian designs in Kashmir,” he said.
In her address, Asiya Andrabi, Chairperson Dukhtaran-e-Millat, said that agenda of BJP-PDP has been conceived by RSS.
“There is no difference between BJP-PDP. If Congress and National Conference brought army in Kashmir, PDP has brought Indian leaders in Kashmir, through BJP.”
She claimed that refugees of West Pakistan have already been settled in Jammu. “Lubha Ram Gandhi has already exposed the Indian game plan. It is now only an eye wash, when someone says that they will be settled.”
She said the Bar Association should organize a three day workshop and all the pro-freedom organization, groups and individuals should be invited to participate.
“The workshop should discuss the Kashmir problem in its entirety and devise ways and means to succeed in our struggle.”
Advocate Ghulam Nabi Shaheen, said that seminars are held to educate people and is not a useless exercise.
“We are involved in the freedom struggle from 1931 but we have failed to present a charter of freedom to the people. We should have fixed our targets,” he said.
Advocate Arshad Andrabi said that people should be ready for “Jihad and then only there will be reward of Allah for us.”
“Six lakh Muslims were killed in Jammu in November, 1947 just to change the demography of the state. settlement of nearly a million West Pakistan refugees will again change the demography,” he added.
Former Bar president advocate N A Ronga, advocate Mohammad Amin Bhat, DAK president Dr Nissar-ul-Haq and Peer Saif-ullah, representative of Hurriyat Conference (G), also addressed the seminar held at Bemina here.
