BARAMULLA: The contractors in Tangmarg area of this north Kashmir district Tuesday protested against the Ferozpora Basin Irrigation Division, which has not cleared their bills.
Led by President of the Gulmarg Contractors Union Abdual Rehman Lone, the protesters locked the office of the Division as a mark of protest. He said the Division hasn’t paid them for the projects completed after September 2014.
“If the payment against the works completed by contractors at different places isn’t released soon, we will not allow the Division to work,” he said.
The union asked the authorities to pay them by March 27.
“If they fail, we will not allow any work in the concerned division,” Lone said.
“We have been running from pillar to post for last seven months for the release of payments. We borrowed money from the banks in order to complete the works. But now the government is making us suffer,” he told media persons.
The protests ended after Sub-District Magistrate concerned, Abdul Qayoom, assured to resolve the contractors’ issue.
“I have called a meeting of the concerned officials and stakeholders. All the issues related to pending bills and unreleased payments will be taken up and every issue of contractors will be resolved,” he said.
