JAMMU: Congress MLA Choudhary Ajaz Ahmad Khan Saturday appealed the ruling PDP-BJP coalition to provide timely compensation to farmers, particularly from Gool-Arnas constituency in Jammu, who suffered damages to crops due to the recent bad weather.
He said the authorities in the constituency are yet to assess the losses.
“Incessant rains, which lashed Jammu and Kashmir in the past several days, have affected 50 per cent crop production. The experts believe the situation could worsen if weather continues to remain wet. I have already directed the concerned district officers to submit the report pertaining to damage to crops due to incessant rains and the report would be submitted to government accordingly for further necessary action,” he said.
“Sowing of vegetable seeds is our major concern. Persistent bad weather will cause a huge dent to the production of vegetables, leading to inflation in future. Concerned department has already constituted an advisory committee to guide the farmers to control further damage to the crops, but nothing has been done in this context so far,” he added.
He said the rain, so far, hasn’t made “much impact” on horticulture, but if “it continues to rain in April, flowers can suffer a huge damage”.
“The farmers just want relief,” he said. “I appeal the government to give right and timely compensation to these farmers. That is what the government’s responsibility is.”
He also expressed solidarity with the farmers who have suffered losses to crop and livestock, assuring to take up the matter with the concerned departments.
