PULWAMA: Residents of this south Kashmir Township Thursday accused the authorities of shielding the doctors posted at the District hospital allegedly responsible for death of two pregnant women due to medical negligence last week.
On Monday last a pregnant woman, Rukhsana 20 and her newborn died in the hospital due to the alleged negligence of doctors and the para-medical staff.
Two days later on Wednesday, another 29 year old woman Khursheeda and her newborn died in the hospital due to alleged medical negligence. Her death triggered a complete shutdown and violent protests in the town for two consecutive days with locals demanding the transfer of entire medical and para-medical staff from the hospital.
To pacify the anger the authorities agreed to meet the demand of the people and immediately transferred at least 52 employees from the para-medical staff.
They also assured the protesting locals of the transfer of all the medical staff within three days. However, more than a week has passed, the health authorities are yet to touch the doctors overstaying in the hospital, the residents said.
They alleged that the authorities transferred the para-medical staff within twenty four hours after the incident only to pacify the public anger but were shielding the influential doctors posted in the hospital for over a decade.
“Our demand was the transfer of both medical and para-medical staff. It was only after the district administration assured us of fulfilling our demands that we had agreed to call-off the shutdown and protests. But now more than a week has passed over staying doctors are yet to be transferred,” said a local, Nisar Ahmad.
“But the authorities seem to have victimized the para-medicos only.”
