SRINAGAR: Head Department of Earth Sciences, University of Kashmir, Prof Shakil A Romshoo has been awarded the National Geoscience Award 2013 in recognition to his achievements in the field of Remote Sensing and Geoinformation System.
In a statement, a KU spokesman said that the award is in recognition of the significant contribution made by Prof Romshoo in the applications of Remote Sensing and GIS in Earth and Environmental Sciences.
“The award carries a cash award of Rs. 2.0 lakhs, certificate, citation and a trophy.”
The spokesman said that the award was being conferred on Prof. Romshoo by the President of India, Pranab Mukharjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan on April 6.
Alumni of the University of Tokyo, Japan and Asian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bangkok, Prof Romshoo has worked in various national and international organizations before joining Kashmir University in 2004, the spokesman said.
He said that Prof Romshoo has travelled widely for academic interactions and is the author of more than 100 national and inter-national publications.
Prof Romshoo has won several national and international awards for his research contributions, the spokesman said.
He said that Romshoo has also earned membership of several national and state Advisory committees, professional bodies and programmes. “Presently, he is leading a research team in the field of snow and glacier studies in Himalayas with a focus on climate change.”
