Hajin residents demand repairing of Jhelum embankments

Hajin: Residents of Hajin town Bandipora district held a protest demonstration Sunday demanding repair of the bund along the river Jhelum in the area.
Hundreds of residents of the area assembled near the Tehsil office here and urged the authorities repair the bund damaged at many places.
The protestors said that breach in the bund near Bangthyari village in Hajin has created panic among the residents. “At Bangithyar, the bund is weak. We brought the matter into the notice of authorities so many times but to no action has been taken so far,” Abdul Majeed, a protestor told Kashmir Reader.
“There are breaches at several other places along the embankments. The breached parts of bund are very dangerous for the whole area. If rains continue, our locality will be flooded like last year.”
The protestors said that due to incessant rains, the repaired embankments have started to washing off. “In case the water level increases in river Jhelum, our area will be flooded,” another local, Fayaz Ahmad, said.
Later on Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Shah Faisal visited the area.
He assured the protestors that work to repair the bund will begin soon. “In fact, the repair work has already begun and hopefully, it will be completed within two or three days,” he said.
The protestors dispersed peacefully later on.
