SRINAGAR: The authorities Saturday organised a training camp at Jammu’s Udhampur district to boost the saffron cultivation in the hilly area.
An official handout issued here said the programme was held in order to boost “highly remunerative saffron cultivation in non-traditional hilly areas of district Udhampur and Reasi.”
It was organised by the agriculture department under Prof Dr F A Nehvi of SK University of Agriculture Science and Technology Kashmir, it added.
The handout said about 39 farmers of the district participated in the programme.
Dr Nehvi, as per the statement, told the farmers that “diversification of agriculture sector is need of the hour which will explore new vistas in the field of agriculture and will help in increasing the farmers’ income by taking up the saffron cultivation on a larger scale.”
Chief Agriculture Officer Udhampur R L Bhagat said that “saffron trials were being carried out in the district for the last couple of years with encouraging results,” it said.
