ANANTNAG: Authorities on Friday shifted back the maternity and child hospital (MCH) Anantnag from Janglat Mundi to congested Sherbagh locality triggering massive protests by the National conference workers who alleged that the decision to shift back the hospital was taken under political pressure. The district level officers of the health department on the directions of the higher ups began the process of shifting the MCH to old district hospital building Anantnag after the later was shifted to new 300 bedded building block. However after the move was opposed by some traders running their establishments in Sherbagh locality, the authorities had already shifted the gyneacology section to Janglat Mundi stopped shifting other sections. As the people and experts raised questions over the wisdom of authorities to keep the gynea section and SNCU at two
different places which they said that can put the lives of new borns in danger, the authorities shifted back the gynaecology section to Sherbagh last night. The overnight shifting of the gynea section back to the congested Sherbagh Friday triggered protests by the National conference workers. The protests were led by district general secretary of the party and the defeated candidate in recently held assembly polls, Iftikhar Ahmad Misgar. The protesters raising slogans against the health authorities demanded that the maternity hospital be completely shifted from congested Sherbagh to Janglat Mundi. They alleged that the overnight shifting of the gynae section of MCH back to Sherbagh was done on the directions of some political leaders. “The MCH building at Sherbagh has been declared unsafe by the fire and emergency services years ago. Taj Mohiudin after seeing the messy state of health in the hospital last year on spot passed the directions for its shifting to old DH building Janglat. The patients not only have to bear the brunt of lack of space at Sherbagh but also
of the poor infrastructure. Shifting of the maternity hospital to Janglat Mundi will be in the interest of the people,” NC leader told Kashmir Reader.
He alleged that the health authorities are being pressurised by some political leaders not to shift the hospital. “Health authorities after shifting the gyneacology section of the MCH to Janglat Mundi were pressurized by some political leaders to the extent that they had to shift it back to Sherbagh overnight,” Misgar said. “You can three pregnant women sharing same bed at Sherbagh. So we have
the alternative why should not we make a use of the same,” he said.
He said that he has set a 24 hour deadline to the district admin for shifting of the hospital completely to Janglat Mundi. “If they fail to do so in 24 hours i along with my workers will go on a hunger strike
in the premises of the district hospital. We will not allow anyone to play politics on the healthcare,” Misgar told Kashmir Reader. He however said that the authorities can keep a dental section and OPD of the gyeanecology section at Sherbagh so that the business of the traders running their shops in the area is not affected.
Deputy commissioner, Anantnag, Tasaduq Jeelani, said that the director health services who is visiting the hospital in next two days will take a final decision with regard to the shifting of the hospital. “Final decision in this regard will be taken very soon. The decision will not be only patient-friendly but also in favor of those who have some concerns over the shifting of the hospital to Janglat Mundi,” DC told Kashmir Reader.
