Srinagar: A complete shutdown was observed in parts of the city to mark the 25th anniversary of the Gaw Kadal massacre in which nearly 50 people were killed by government forces.
The call for shutdown had been given by various pro- freedom groups including Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani.
All shops and business establishment remained closed in Maisuma, Lal Chowk and adjoining areas amid skeletal movement of traffic.
JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik led a protest march from party headquarters in Maisuma to pay homage to the victims.
Addressing the protesters, he said, “The real killers of Gaw Kadal massacre are the then Jammu and Kashmir Governor Jagmohan and the then Indian Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.”
Soon after the march, clashes broke out between the protesters and the government forces which continued for many hours.
Police resorted to baton charge and teargas shelling to disperse them.
There were no reports of anyone getting hurt in the clashes, the officer said.
