North Forest Division earns Rs 7 crore from timber supply

SRINAGAR: North Circle Forest Division Sopore has supplied 2.61 lakh cubic feet of timber to the consumers so far this fiscal, earning a revenue of Rs 7, 00, 00,000.
“The timber was provided to consumers of north Kashmir the last nine months of the current fiscal. Besides, 20,000 cubic feet were supplied to the 973 flood-affected households up to December 2014 on concessional rates and on fast track basis,” an official handout issued here said.
The department, it said, has a target to further provide 50,000 cubic feet timber to flood sufferers in the Circle during this financial year, it said.
“The process will continue in the next financial year till all flood sufferers under the forest divisions of the Circle are covered,” it added.
It said the Circle has supplied 45,000 quintals of firewood to the mosques and other religious institutions for winters.
It has earned “revenue of over Rs 7 crore up to ending December 2014 on account of distribution of timber and other forest produce,” it said.
In the four territorial divisions under the Circle, 9200 cubic feet illicit timber, 16 vehicles, 18 horses, 927.5 quintals of medicinal herbs and minor forest produce was seized, it said, adding 84 cases were registered against the offenders.
It said the department also “evicted 62 hectares of encroached forest land” and “punished 14 officials for dereliction of duty and negligence” during the period. It said a network of “hi-tech nurseries” was established all over the four forest divisions for “eco-restoration of degraded and denuded forest areas.”
“It resulted in record production of over 22 lakh saplings including 14 lakh coniferous species (Deodar and Kail). These saplings would be utilized for mass greening of the degraded forest slopes on scientific micro-watershed basis in phased manner,” it added.
