Srinagar: Kashmir Valley, which is under the grip of a dry and cold spell, is likely to experience some respite as the weatherman Saturday predicted moderate to light snowfall in higher reaches and plains including this summer capital city Tuesday.
“Around night of January 13, we are expecting light to moderate snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir Valley,” Director of local meteorological department here, Sonam Lotus told Kashmir Reader.
“As far Srinagar is concerned, there is a possibility of light snowfall,” he said.
“As far Kashmir and Ladakh is concerned, we are not expecting any major change except that from 13th night, 14 and 15 January, it will be cloudy and as such there will be decrease in day temperature. At the same time, there will be slight rise in night temperature,” Lotus said.
Kashmir is amidst 40-day-long period of harsh winter known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ and has not received good snowfall so far although a light snowfall occurred in Gulmarg last week.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar and other places remained below freezing point with the summer capital recording as low as minus 4.8 degrees Celsius.
The world famous ski-resort, Gulmarg, recorded minus 3.1 degrees Celsius while Pahalgam was minus 6.6 degrees Celsius.
Leh town in Ladakh region recorded a minimum temperature of minus 16.2 degrees Celsius, while Kargil town had minimum temperature of minus 16 degrees Celsius, a MeT official said.
Meanwhile, there is some good news for people of Jammu, the winter capital of the state, where weatherman has predicted fog-free mornings on Tuesday and Wednesday.
“As far as Jammu is concerned, we have experienced heavy fog during morning for last four days and people will get respite from foggy weather conditions on January 13 and 14 and there will be no fog on these two days,” Lotus added.
Meanwhile, authorities today issued fresh schedule regarding movement of traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
However, in case of heavy snowfall, a separate schedule shall be issued for regulating the traffic on one way basis on the highway, an official handout said.
