PULWAMA: People Tuesday foiled an extortion bid by an unidentified pistol- borne man in Kawsibagh village of this south Kashmir district
The accused, however, managed to flee from the spot by firing aerial shots.
Eyewitnesses said that at around 8 am an unidentified man entered the house of Manzoor Ahmad Mir and demanded 50,000 rupees and a car that was parked in the house premises. “As the man threatened the house owner, the wife and mother of Mir raised an alarm inviting the attention of neighbors,” they said.
They said that as the people started assembling outside the house, the extortionist fled from the spot. “As we tried to chase the man he took out a pistol and fired several aerial shots,” said a local.
The firing by the extortionist created panic in the entire village.
Soon after the incident, locals said, government forces including army and SOG personal reached the area and started searches.
Locals complained that the area has been witnessing frequent theft cases during the night hours from last couple of weeks. “Many thefts have occured in the area during last two weeks. The thieves have unleashed terror in the area and the police has miserably failed to nab them. Todays incident has created doubts in our minds,” locals told Kashmir Reader.
