Sumbal: Residents of Shilwat Sonawari Tuesday protested against Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution department.
The protests were held against the alleged denial of ration to the families who lost their cards in the September 2014 floods.
Eyewitness said that the protesters blocked the Bandipora-Srinagar highway for several hours resulting in heavy traffic jam in the area.
“We are being denied rice because we could not save our ration cards during floods. We are being told that we are not registered consumers, thus, no rice will be given us,” the protesters said.
According to protesters the ration is being distributed only among those who have the ration cards.
“We too have right to receive free ration. What would we eat until the department issues new ration cards to us,” a protesting youth, Altaf Ahmad said.
Protestors also accused the local ration depot of selling the ration in black market. They said that ration was being supplied to the local depot for all but the concerned depot allegedly sells it in black market
“Rice quota is being supplied for both card and non-card holders but he has made his own rules. He actually sells the rice in black market,” they alleged.
“We appeal the concerned department to resolve the issue or we will launch an agitation,” the protesters threatened.
