Rocket fire that killed 2 soldiers triggered forest fire in Tanghdar

Srinagar: The two soldiers killed in Tanghdar two days ago had been burnt alive after a rocket fired by militants set afire their barracks. The explosives in the barracks went off and caused a major forest fire, a police official said.
The official, who insisted not to be named, said that a group of heavily armed militants who were trying to sneak into this side of the LoC fired a rocket towards the patrolling party of 5/5 Grenadiers near the Bhijdar Post in Tanghdar on Saturday. The rocket, however, missed the target and hit the barracks where arms and explosives were stored.
“The barracks caught fire after the explosives kept inside it exploded one after another. Two soldiers were burnt alive and two others received burn wounds while trying to douse the flames,” the official said, quoting from the report about the incident submitted by the army’s officer in command.
The official identified the slain soldiers as havaldar Suresh Bahadur and rifleman Vijay both of 5/5 Grenadiers. The injured army men have been identified as havaldar Dum Bahadur of 5/5 Grenadiers and Bushan Sharma of BSF 12 battalion.
The official said that as the flames engulfed the nearby forests, a team from Border Security Force’s 12 Battalion tried to bring it under control. However, the blaze continued to wreck havoc and destroyed scores of trees. It was eventually controlled by a team of army and BSF soldiers with the help of fire fighters on Sunday.
“The army has reported that only one rocket was fired by the enemy. They have not reported if the exchange of fire took place,” the official said.
