Azadi slogans interrupt revelry

Baramulla: Noisy New Year celebrations at Gulmarg on Wednesday, which were part of the Tourism Department’s Jashne Chillai Kalan festival, were interrupted briefly when a group of youth shouted pro-azadi and anti-India slogans.
Witnesses said when the New Year was announced, local and non-local tourists broke into song and dance revelry in the dazzlingly decked hotels, golf course and other buildings.
At the same time, some youths, apparently protesting against such an extravaganza when the Valley was yet to recover from the devastating flood and other issues, shouted pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
“They also smashed several firepots around which the revelers were dancing and singing,” said Hanif, a teenager who had come for celebrations from Srinagar.
Security personnel who were deployed near the Golf Club chased the protesting youths away and the celebrations resumed.
