Srinagar: Days after Syed Ali Geelani said that the large turnout in elections was a result of BJP phobia, the chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Friday said that taking part in elections is akin to treason and betrayal.
In a statement Geelani said, “Development and change of faces are lame excuse and in no case one can justify participation in elections. Elections and freedom movement are quite different and participation in these elections will prove detrimental for movement. We believe that participation in these elections is synonymous to treason and betrayal with our precious sacrifices and resistance movement.”
He said, “Freedom struggle is a sacred movement for people of Jammu and Kashmir and it is obligatory for everybody to be loyal with the movement. It is the duty of people to safeguard scarifies of martyrs. For that the first and foremost obligation is that we should boycott all these elections.”
Geelani thanked Kashmir University students for taking pledge to boycott the elections.
“I pay my gratitude to University students and I am all praise for their daring stance and high spirits. Let all student community follow their pledge. They have exhibited courage and it is noble and nice precedence to follow,” said Hurriyat (G) chairman.
He also appealed student fraternity from schools, colleges and Dar-ul-Ulooms to carry door to door election boycott campaign.
