Srinagar: A day before polling, a clash broke out on Monday between a group of people protesting against the elections and the police in Hajin area of Bandipora district.
It was learnt that the protesters, shouting pro-freedom and election boycott slogans, pelted the police vehicles patrolling inner areas of Hajin with stones.
The protesters also attacked the vehicle of the station house officer of Hajin police station with stones and projectiles, sources said.
A senior police official said, “In view of the election boycott call given by Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, elaborate arrangements have been made by the police and security forces in volatile areas of Hajan, Markundal, Sumbal, Sonawari and other adjoining areas of Bandipora district.”
About 73 companies of paramilitary troopers and the police have been deployed in these constituencies.
Three assembly constituencies of Bandipora district—Bandipora, Gurez and Sonawari—will go to polls on Tuesday in the first phase of the five-phased assembly election.
