Bukhari’s cavalcade attacked in city centre, 4 hurt

Srinagar: A group of youngsters stoned the cavalcade of PDP candidate Syed Altaf Bukhari at Budshah Bridge on Saturday, injuring three PDP workers.
Bukhari, PDP’s candidate from Amira Kadal assembly constituency, was returning home after submitting his nomination papers at the Deputy Commissioner’s office, when the youth hurled rocks at his cavalcade, witnesses told Kashmir Reader.
Despite heavy deployment of CRPF soldiers and the police, the youth appeared on the Maisuma bund and threw stones at Bukhari’s supporters, injuring three of them. A youth identified as Mohammad Usman also suffered injuries in the clashes that continued for several hours.
Wind screens of at least four vehicles were damaged in the attack.
The CRPF and the police used batons and fired teargas canisters to disperse the stone pelting youth. However, the youth regrouped in Maisuma, considered to be a bastion of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), and engaged the forces in pitched battles. The clashes soon spread to neighborhood areas of Madina Chowk, and Red Cross Road. The JKLF has called for poll boycott and most its leaders have been arrested for the same reason.
“We downed shutters and ran for safety. Movement of traffic was also disrupted,” said Mohammad Subhan, a shopkeeper.
