Srinagar: Schools upto middle standard would close for winter vacation on November 24, a day before the first of the five-phased elections in J&K kicks off.
According to an order issued Friday by Nirmal Sharma, Government’s Secretary to School Education Department, all schools up to middle standard in Kashmir division and winter zones of Jammu shall observe winter break from November 24 till February 23, 2015.
It said the high and higher secondary schools shall observe the vacations from December 8 to February 23 next year.
“Any default on the part of private schools in observance of the calendar so authorized of vacations shall attract action under rules,” reads the order. However, no reason has been given for the early winter break this year.
This year, the students already had a long layoff in the wake of devastating floods in September and an extended winter vacation in March. It’s also for the first time in last several years that winter vacations have been ordered from November rather than the last month of the calendar.
Last year, the winter vacation was ordered from December 2 (upto middle level) to March 3 and later extended by one week. And a year
In 2012, the vacations were ordered from December 2 and in 2011 from the first day of the last month of the year.
The early vacation in schools comes little over a month after government announced to conduct all examinations upto under-graduation level in March next year. In between the time, the government vetoed announcement of mass promotion by private schools, warning them to cancel their recognition.
