Hit-n-run: army vehicle kills girl in Handwara

Baramulla: A 12-year-old girl was killed Friday after she was hit by an army vehicle in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, triggering protests by local residents.
Farhat Manzoor, daughter of Manzoor Ahmad Rather, died on the spot as she was hit by the vehicle in an army convoy near Ganapora, Langate (Handwara) in the evening.
Immediately after the accident, hundreds of local residents took to streets and shouted anti-army and anti-India slogans, reports said.
The protesters placed the body of the girl, a Class 5 student, in the middle of the road. They were demanding action against the erring army driver.
After assurances from police that the guilty will be booked, the angry people dispersed peacefully, reports said.
However, an army spokesman said their vehicle was involved in the accident.
“Army does not do hit and run. There was no army vehicle in sight,” Col GS (information warfare) Brijesh Pandey said in a statement.
